Do not be overawed when a man grows rich,
when the splendor of his house increases;
for he will take
nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. though while he
lived he counted himself blessed—and men praise you when you prosper— he will join the
generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of life.
~ Psalm 49:16-19
Wealthy, in the world's eyes means more than money. This could read "do not be jealous when a man gains wealth, power, false respect, luxury, and leisure" The Psalmist is telling us, "beware of false senses of security" (It's OK to have money & authority but be very careful not to put them above the Lord) The Psalmist tells us, "he counted himself blessed" Today, many people will say "I'm blessed" because of the material things they have in their life. (they have a false sense of eternal security in thinking, since God has given me so much I must be saved) Matthew 9:2 says's, "Some men brought to Jesus a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,
he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." Jesus did not immediately heal the man as Jesus knew that the only true blessing in life is forgiveness of sin. Being re-united with the Father is the true blessing in life, it's forgiveness of sins, nothing else matters. True blessing (salvation) results in obedience, not material possesions. 1 Timothy 6:6 tells us, "But godliness with contentment is great gain"
Becuase of pride, it's easy to fall when you gain riches as men will praise you when prosper, and they will flatter you, but beware! Jude 1:16 says, "These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires;
they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage" So if you find yourself being tempted to covet thy neighbor, "Do not be overawed when a man grows rich,when the splendor of his house increases; for he will take nothing with him when he dies"
When you hear a man boasting of his physical blessings remember, " though while he lived he counted himself blessed...his splendor will not descend with him "
Psalm 36:1-2 says's, "...There is no fear of God before his eyes. For in his own eyes he
flatters himself too much to detect or hate his sin" The man who trusts in riches...
"will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of life"
