While in exile, Jews had fasted and mourned on certain days in memory of the siege and overthrow of Jerusalem. Now that they had returned to Jerusalem they wanted to know: should we keep fasting? Zechariah warned that all religious ceremonies, however proper, were meaningless unless peoples lives were controlled by God.
Zechariah 7:8-10 - And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: “This is what the
Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy
and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the
widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against
each other.’
We see the same thing in Micah and Isaiah...
Micah 6:8 - He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God
Isaiah 58:6-9 The message translation “This is the kind of fast day I’m after: to break the chains of injustice, get rid of exploitation in the workplace, free the oppressed & cancel debts. What I’m interested in seeing you do is:
sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless & poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families. Do this and the lights will turn on, and your lives will turn around at once. Righteousness will pave your way. The God of glory will secure your passage. Then when you pray, God will answer.
You’ll call out for help and I’ll say, ‘Here I am.’
